The River Shannon silver eel fisheries : variations in commercial and experimental catch levels i
نویسنده
چکیده
Management of the eel fisheries of the River Shannon, Ireland’s largest river system, has involved van ous stock enhancement measures since 1959. Declining natural recruitmenr levels have limited the effecriveness of stocking programmes for nearly two decades. Observations on declining yellow eel stocks in several major lakes have been supported by the results of studies undertaken annually on the seaward migrating silver eel populations from 1992 to ‘99. A decline in the combined silver eel yield from a series of commercial and experimental fishing sites has occurred, despite increases in fishing effort. Changes in silver ccl length-frequency distributions and sex ratios appear to be linked to declining stock levels. Silver eel migration patterns vary within the catchment and in upper Shannon catchment sites a lunar periodicity is normally evident in the autumn/winter silver eel movements. Silver eel migra non in the loxver reaches of the river system is strongly influenced by variations in discharge due to river regulation for hydroelectricity generation. Despite the decline in stock levels, the results of observations at experimental sites and on commercial ccl weir operations suggest that improvements in silver eel fish ing methods could result in significantly greater catch levels.

Diamondback Terrapin Mortality in the American Eel Pot Fishery and Evaluation of a Bycatch Reduction Device
The effect of commercial fisheries on nontarget species is a burgeoning issue for both fishery managers and estuarine biologists. We documented diamondback terrapin (Malaclemys terrapin) bycatch in cloth-funnel eel pots used in a Maryland (United States) commercial American eel (Anguilla rostrata) fishery. Between 1992 and 2001, we obtained 40 male and 9 female terrapin captures and 1 male terr...

The relationship between the Lower Danube River level and Romanian annual catches of Pontic shad (Alosa immaculata, Bennett 1835) were analyzed. For analysis of long term data on the Danube River water level and Pontic shad catch, combinations of different methods were applied using statistical programs, SPSS 13.0 and MATLAB 6. Periodograms, containing cyclic patterns, were obtained using Fouri...
متن کاملAnthropogenic Impacts on American Eel Demographics in Hudson River Tributaries, New York
—Populations of American eel Anguilla rostrata along the eastern coast of North America have declined drastically for largely unknown reasons. We examined the population dynamics of American eels in six tributaries of the Hudson River, New York, to quantify their distribution and the impacts of anthropogenic stressors. With up to 155 American eels per 100 m, tributary densities are greater than...
متن کاملAbundance Trends of Glass Eels between 1978 and 1999 from Fisheries Data in the Gironde Basin, France
—The glass eel is fished in the Gironde Basin, France, with large push nets, scoop nets, and the recently introduced small push net. This study uses fishery data to generate fisheries and abundance indicators for glass eels. Total catch, total effort, and catch per unit effort (CPUE) were calculated for the period 1978–1999 by classical statistical methods and by general linear models (GLM). Us...

The paper describes and analyzes original data, extracted from historical documents and scientific surveys, related to Russian fisheries in the southeastern part of the Gulf of Finland and its inflowing rivers during the 15- early 20(th) centuries. The data allow tracing key trends in fisheries development and in the abundance of major commercial species. In particular, results showed that, ove...
